Extended Curve/Tone Controls - Ability to make tone/film
like adjustments to raw data. Both in the highlights and shadows.
Raw Stacking - Image stacking in raw is effectively increasing the
bit depth of capture without getting the dull look. It allows capture of
wide DR scenes and/or decrease noise and increase detail resolution in
shadows and highlights dramatically.
There are 2 main modes of stacking: stacking of similar exposures (same
shutter speed, same aperture, and same ISO setting) and bracketed exposures.
Results from the first method are usually cleaner (because the same base ISO
can be used), but more exposures are needed. To increase DR by 2 stops,
using the first method, 4 exposures are needed; for the second method - only
2. A variation of stacking is using three exposures, where each of the
colour channels is exposed to the right of the histogram. This is best
achieved if your camera is loaded with UniWB and linear curve - that will
allow one to determine the best possible exposure for each channel using
in-camera histogram. All 3 methods can be combined into one stack.
Tech. Note: the absence of the dull look is explained very
easily - as a result of ISIR we effectively generate a new linear raw file,
and all the raw adjustments including tone curve are applied to it
simultaneously. The resulting image bears the integrity of a captured image,
and is not affected by the mismatching contrast of images superimposed,
after the conversion is already done.
